Eventually coming home in 16th place was not the Milano-Sanremo that Caleb Ewan had been hoping for. Nevertheless he realises the climbing quality of the front group was just too strong.
“Obviously I am disappointed with this result. Like every year, I make Milan-Sanremo a big goal. I was already close to it twice and today I also had the good legs," said Ewan. My teammates piloted me well towards the Cipressa and I could also count on Jasper De Buyst and Maxim Van Gils in the sinking."
"Maybe I turned a little too far up the Poggio to really make an impact on the race," he explains. "With the killer pace on the climb it was extremely difficult to move up and I, like some other sprinters in the group, had to hope that it would come back together for a sprint. Unfortunately it didn't."
