"Why do we need to change something?” - Giulio Ciccone questions is rumoured 'Super League' is needed within cycling

Despite talks having reportedly been going on for some time, rumours of a cycling 'Super League' have really ramped up over the last week or so. One man who doesn't seem too keen on the idea though, is Lidl-Trek star Giulio Ciccone.

"From my side, I don’t want to lose this feeling that we have with the sport. Why do we need to change something?” questions the Italian, who won the King of the Mountains at the 2023 Tour de France, when quizzed on the subject by GCN. “It is always like this, and this is our sport, we like it as it is, and I think we need to keep the same history.”

The likes of Jumbo-Visma and the INEOS Grenadiers are rumoured to be the spearheads of the new Super League and a total of five or six teams are signed up. In Ciccone's eyes though, the current calendar is perfect and gives riders plenty of opportunity to pick and choose the races and plans they'd prefer.

“I think for me, I really like the calendar as it is, because we have many races to choose from. If you want to do Paris-Nice, you can do Paris-Nice. If you want to do Tirreno-Adriatico, you can do Tirreno-Adriatico,” Ciccone explains. “I think it is good like this because you can split everything depending on which main goal you have. I don’t know why they want to change it, honestly, but I don’t want to say anything about it because I don’t want to make some gaffe!”
