The finale to the 6th stage of the CRO Race was incredibly chaotic as overall race winner Orluis Aular crashed face first into the Zagreb tarmac. Amongst the chaos however, Campbell Stewart thrived.
“We’ve been trying all week [to win a stage], we came here with hopes of me getting a stage and then also Eddie Dunbar for the GC," recapped the New Zealander in his post-stage interview with Team Jayco AlUla's official website. "The GC turned out to be sort of sprinters or an intermediate kind of race, so we were searching for wins and we eventually got there on the last day. It’s been awesome and it’s been a great way to wrap up the season here in Croatia!”
As mentioned, Aular took overall victory at the race despite crashing hard in the bunch sprint. The Venezuelan national champion however will owe Stewart a massive debt as if Alexander Kristoff would've taken the 10 bonus seconds on offer the victory would've gone home with Uno-X.
