With a second and a third place already in the bag and a leader's jersey on his shoulders, Olav Kooij had only one more thing in mind for the final stage of ZLM Tour. That was to deliver a stage victory for Jumbo-Visma colours in their home race. And that's exactly what the Dutch sprinter did, crossing the line ahead of Sam Welsford and Jakub Mareczko.
"We came with the goal of winning a stage and the GC, but for that stage we had to wait until the last day," Kooij laughs in a quick post-race interview. "In sprints not everything always goes according to plan. It's good to see that we learned from previous days and that the sprint preparation was on point today."
What exactly went better? According to Kooij, not much. "We're just doing those little things right now and haven't suddenly done something different. We're confident in what we've been doing all year and if it falls right I can finish it. I showed that today."
"We knew that I am in good shape, so if I were given the space, I would always be close to victory," Kooij continues. "I am happy with the win. As a team we came through the last corner first and from there it was full throttle. Then it was up to me. This brings extra joy, we did super well today."
