Stage 3 of the 2023 Giro d'Italia was a stage of two halves. For much of the day it seemed as if nothing much would happen but in the final 50km the day's racing ignited.
With Team Jayco-AlUla taking to the front of the peloton as the road began to rise, the Aussie-based outfit kept the pace high in order to drop as many of Michael Matthews's sprint rivals as possible. Although the likes of Mads Pedersen and Kaden Groves were able to hold contact with the front of the race, Matthews had enough left in the tank to take his 40th career win, the first since last year's Tour de France.
