Despite the scare of a late crash, UAE Team Emirates leader João Almeida was safely ridden back into the bunch by his teammates, something the Portuguese is incredibly grateful for.
"It wasn't a perfect day. A boy in front of me fell, after which I also fell to the ground," revealed the 24-year-old in a post-stage interview with his team's official sources. "I immediately jumped back on my bike and was lucky that my teammates were there. Without them I would never have come back. I now focus on my recovery and hope that I can maintain my level."
As an added reward for regrouping with the main bunch before the finish line, Almeida has now moved up in the general classification of the race to 2nd place. The former Pink Jersey wearer may be three further seconds behind the overall leader Remco Evenepoel after the Belgian took three bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint, but Almeida is now sitting pretty in second just 32 seconds behind.
