Toon Aerts has this week split up with Baloise - Trek Lions on mutual agreement, but his fight to attempt to prove innocence is ongoing. On his and the UCI's request, they are now investigating the possibility that his positive doping test originated from a recovery shake.
Aerts tested positive for an out-of-competition test on the 19th of January for Letrozole, a substance used to battle breast cancer. The revelation was only made weeks after near the season end. Aerts was not suspended, however he has opted not to resume racing.
He has since been finding a way to prove he is innocent, a battle still in the makings. Recently, the possibility of there being contamination in a recovery shake is being investigated, however with the process taking several months, it has seen Aerts miss the start of the Cyclocross season this weekend, the Belgian who currently is not linked to any team anymore.
The 28-year is also said to not have cut his hair since the reveal, leaving to no chance the possibility of working through his damaged reputation.
