Maxim Van Gils' is feeling the effects of his UCI suspension, with the 2024 road season about to get underway. Despite admitting his mistake for his slapping of a rival in a sprint at the Japan Cup Criterium, Van Gils doesn't believe the punishment matches the crime.
"I'm relieved it's been resolved. But I find the 25-day suspension very harsh for what I have done," the Lotto Dstny rider tells Vélofuté. I think many would have acted like I did. However, I understand that the UCI has made an example of my case and is firm in terms of punishment. I understand and fully accept their decision."
For those that aren't aware, Van Gils slapped a rival in the back of the head as the sprint for victory was taking place in the Japan Cup Criterium. "You can bet I'll never do this again," he says. "I have also had a lot of support. It is now completed and I want to focus on cycling again. I actually get the morale from the suspension to start doing that again."
"I'm looking forward to racing again," he concludes, although that won't be for some time yet. "I still have a month before my suspension end."
