"This marks the end of my professional career" - Nathan Van Hooydonck gives sad update after returning home for the first time since crash

Nathan Van Hooydonck was involved in a horrific car crash recently and needed resuscitation and a spell in a medically induced coma but thankfully managed to survive. As he returns home however, he has a sad update about his professional career.

"I realise that I was incredibly lucky", Van Hooydonck says in conversation with Jumbo-Visma's official website. "Things may have gone differently if I hadn't gotten good help so quickly. I'm fine now, but I still have to deal with the fact that this marks the end of my professional career."

Van Hooydonck suffered a heart attack whilst driving with his pregnant partner and child, crashing into a number of cars. Following numerous medical test, the Belgian has been given an internal defibrillator (ICD) and been diagnosed with a heart muscle anomaly.

"I would like to express my gratitude to the people who helped me, the medical team at the hospital and all the fans who sent me messages," he continues. "I will now focus on my recovery and my upcoming fatherhood. Everything is going well with Alicia and the pregnancy, and we eagerly anticipate the birth. That really helps me now."
