Whilst Jumbo-Visma arguably have the biggest amount of strength in depth of any team in the World Tour peloton at this moment in time, two of the team's former bosses Theo de Rooij and Marc Sergeant still think there is room for improvement.
“They already have so much quality on board. And that costs money. If you add an extra leader to that, you will get a hydrocephalus as a team," de Rooij explains in conversation with Wielerflits. "Then the top is much too heavy, the balance is lost. You should try to create such a role in that place from your own cultivation and from the potential you already have.”
“I would look for strong riders around thirty, who are not really winners. Watch Tiesj Benoot now. That was a very good rider for us, but not someone who wins seven or eight times a year," Sergeant agrees. "For him, a team like Jumbo-Visma is a godsend. If you are just below an absolute top rider, the chances of winning increase for those kinds of guys. They come with great pleasure. I also told Tiesj: that transfer was the best move of his career. Also, think of a Tim Wellens type. Jumbo-Visma has to look for that this year.”
Jumbo-Visma has already been making moves in the transfer department if rumours are to be believed with Matteo Jorgenson set to join the Black and Yellow train next season from the Movistar Team. Alongside giving new contracts to Jonas Vingegaard and Christophe Laporte, the future plans of Jumbo-Visma are becoming more and more clear.
