One of the few hopes that
Nairo Quintana had of competing this 2023 was representing Colombia in the Glasgow World Championship. Precisely the last time the former Vuelta and Giro winner competed in a UCI event was at the World Championship in Australia at the end of last year. However, this time he has not been selected;
In statements to Ciclismocolombiano, the president of the Colombian Cycling Federation, Mauricio Vargas, explained why they have not taken him despite the fact that the rider commented on ESPN that he wanted to go:
"The Federation, especially the national cycling coach, chose a selection based on the parameters set by the Federation, through a resolution that comes from previous years, where based on the results and competitions where the cyclists are present, the respective selection is chosen."
Thus, Vargas continues, the Colombian national coach did not even consider Nairo for a list that does include Miguel Ángel López, who, unlike him after being expelled from Astaná and not finding a place in Europe, is competing with Team Medellín:
"Nairo was not considered by the national coach, because he was not competing and the truth is that Nairo is a great cyclist and professional, a person we all respect within Colombian cycling, but at the moment the coach did not take his name into account."
