Team Polti - Kometa, which will be called Polti - VisitMalta from 2025 continues its search for another strong sponsor which could boost their budget. Meanwhile a new smaller sponsor is already on board, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
Polti - Kometa just like many other smaller teams always fights for bare survival as a key sponsor might pull out of their deal at any moment. Therefore securing multiple backers is a key to long-term stability and development of a team.
The team of former champions Ivan Basso and Alberto Contador entered the professional scene as EOLO - Kometa in 2021 with a big debut at the Giro d'Italia (Lorenzo Fortunato won a stage). However EOLO, which happens to be as well a major sponsor of the Giro d'Italia, ended their mutual collaboration at the end of 2023. The remaining title sponsor Kometa was joined by Polti, a familiar name thanks to its iconic jerseys from the 90s.
Unlike EOLO, Kometa is not actually leaving the team, but will be replaced as title sponsor by tourist agency VisitMalta. But a quick look at the team's transfers will reveal that arrival of new Maltese sponsor didn't particularly increase the Italian PRT team's budget with modest signings and major departures of Paul Double and Matteo Fabbro. In addition, for unclear reasons, the team has chosen to close down its U23 team citing intention to shift focus to U19 category.
Info @Gazzetta_it - @TeamPoltiKometa (Polti-VisitMalta from 2025) is working to increase his budget and another important sponsor will appear on the jersey for next season, sources confirmed us. Official announcement expect before the end of 2024 @cycling_podcast @ivanbasso
