RCS Sport announce shortened route for Milano-Sanremo with start moved to Pavia

Known for being the longest one-day race on the WorldTour calendar, this year’s edition of Milano-Sanremo will have a slightly shorter route than previous editions, as the race organiser RCS Sport has announced that this year’s race will start outside of Milan in the town of Pavia.

The 2024 edition of Milano-Sanremo will be 288km in length, which is six kilometres shorter than last year’s race. The start of the race has also been moved from Abbiategrasso to the town of Pavia, which is around 40km outside Milan’s city centre and it will be the first time that the race has started there.

However, these are minor changes to a race that is very rarely decided outside of the final 30km, with last year’s edition being won by Mathieu van der Poel with an attack over the top of the Poggio before a daredevil descent to the finish on the Via Roma.

Speaking about this year’s edition of Milano-Sanremo, race director Mauro Vegni said “from today the countdown to 16th March begins and we’re sure that we’ll once again experience a glorious day like last year, which saw four champions, all with different characteristics, compete for success, demonstrating that the Milano-Sanremo is still one of the most coveted races of the year”.
