A new league within cycling may be taking shape and being developed. Perhaps rivalling the World Tour, or directly battling for the rights of it's races, a report suggests the create of 'One Cycling' whose plan is to provide the team's more of the profit from events.
This was reported by RadioCycling this Friday morning. The news outlet says that the project is headlined by Jumbo-Visma CEO Richard Plugge and looks to create a series of between 100 and 120 non-overlapping race days, where the revenue from races will be shared more evenly with the teams participating. Cycling's unstable financial template sees sponsors frequently withdraw, teams even at the top level end, and the idea behind this project certainly is to provide more stability.
However that doesn't come without it's obstacles. Currently the World Tour has plenty overlapping events at top level, both World Tour races and others where the top riders participate in. More importantly however is how the UCI will react and handle this emerging situation which could change the structure of the cycling calendar.
RadioCycling adds that all 18 World Tour teams have or will soon sign NDA's so as to prevent the leak of information, however anonymous sources have already revealed the existence of such project - and according to what is said, not all teams are in favour of this project.
