Olav Kooij has taken the win at the 27th BEMER Cyclassics in Hamburg this Sunday afternoon, fighting off competition for an all-star sprint field in the process.
Five riders got themselves up the road and into the breakaway. Michael Morkov (Astana Qazaqstan Team), Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché - Wanty), Stefan de Bod (EF Education - EasyPost), Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) and Cyrus Monk (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team). With 25km to go however, they were swallowed up by the peloton.
Immediately after, Alex Aranburu launched a counter, drawing out Fabio Christen with him. With over 12km still to go though, they too had been caught and with such an elite sprinting field present, there was little hope of denying the fast men from there. Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe controlling the front of the peloton heading into the finale, but when the sprints launched, it was Team Visma | Lease a Bike's Olav Kooij who took the win ahead of Jonathan Milan and Biniam Girmay.
