After both Mikel Landa and Remco Evenepoel were affected by crashes in the Itzulia Basque Country that also claimed the injury of Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic among others, the Soudal - Quick-Step duo are back training together in preparation for the 2024 Tour de France 2024.
As reported by AS, Landa and Evenepoel have been in a team training camp in the Sierra Nevada for more than two weeks. The intention has been clear since the beginning of the season, despite the setbacks in the Basque Country that resulted in two broken ribs and a broken collarbone for Landa, and also a broken collarbone and some ribs for Evenepoel: to compete in the Tour for the Maillot Jaune against the likes of Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic and Vingegaard, if the Dane is recovered in time.
Landa was signed by Soudal - Quick-Step as Evenepoel's super domestique in what is going to be his Tour de France debut and before his injury, the experienced Basque climber was showing some good legs in his first months with his new team, taking 2nd place overall in the Volta a Catalunya, behind Pogacar, as his best result.
As is already known, Remco Evenepoel will debut in the Tour de France directly with the goal of the Maillot Jaune. The Belgian already knows what it's like to win a Grand Tour, when he was proclaimed winner of the 2022 Vuelta a Espana. He has also worn the Maglia Rose at the Giro d'Italia for multiple days in the past. At last year's Giro however, the coronavirus caused the abandonment of the Soudal - Quick-Step star on the first rest day, with victory eventually going to Primoz Roglic. Therefore, he will be able to seek revenge on the now BORA - hansgrohe rider in this upcoming Tour de France.
His last participation in a Grand Tour was in the 2023 Vuelta a Espana. There, Evenepoel lost out in the general classification fight due to a collapse that caused him to focus solely on stage wins from that point on. In the end, the Soudal Quick-Step rider finished with 3 stage wins, first place in the mountains classification and the combativity award.
