With his win at Paris-Roubaix, Mathieu van der Poel has earned widespread recognition, and Michel Wuyts, who observed the event, provided his take on the Dutchman's future prospects.
“Van der Poel is the deserved winner. To win Paris-Roubaix, you need two things: mastery and luck. Alpecin-Deceuninck played off the right people at the right time. They put down the perfect race,” he wrote in his column at Het Laatste Nieuws.
Two out of the three monuments of the season have been won by the Dutchman, and Wuyts is confident that he can add another one to his list of achievements. “It is clear that Van der Poel is the man of the classic spring. Winning two monuments I rate higher than Pogacar's performance. I am convinced that Van der Poel can also win Liège-Bastogne-Liège in the future.”
