Primoz Roglic was one of the many riders who just wanted to save the day in what was descruibed as the most dangerous stage of the
Giro d'Italia, but he was unable to do so. A crash and a puncture completely threw the Slovenian off in the brutal roads of Tuscany, and he is now behind four UAE Team Emirates - XRG riders who have completely taken over the overall classification.
Roglic crashed with 51 kilometers to go, after an INEOS Grenadiers rider went down. A few kilometers later disaster struck again, as a puncture saw him lose contact with the group he had found himself in. It was a very bad scenario, and the truth is BORA was nowhere to be found with the exception of a stellar Giulio Pellizzari who once again proved to be the most important man next to Roglic.
Pellizzari's support proved key for around an hour of racing, whilst Roglic could also count on the collaboration of Tom Pidcock and Derek Gee to limit losses. Still, in Siena, the former number 1 contender for the pink jersey has lost 2:22 minutes on Isaac del Toro and 1:15 on Juan Ayuso - excluding bonifications.
"It was just hard, no? The pace in the front... In the back I didn't feel really the best of the best. We take it, we finished it, we have to see what to do next," Roglic said in a post-race interview. Without a doubt, a lot has happened on this stage, and UAE's strength in depth was seen in all it's aspects. Del Toro rode a stage at an absurdly high level, Ayuso saved the day and was at all times with the company of both Adam Yates and a bloodied Brandon McNulty who worked for the Spaniard. Roglic in the meantime will head into the second week behind all four, and with no team to be able to attack his main rivals.
This puts BORA in a very difficult tactical situation, but one which Roglic did not want to talk about much right after his arrival to Piazza del Campo. "We will see, huh? Today we lose this minute, sometimes you lose sometimes you win. It's still a long one, but yeah, first need to check the wounds, try to recover and see how to approach it for the next one".
