Lenny Martínez looking to support David Gaudu at Dauphiné mountains: "If I can be the perfect wingman this week, it will be super"

Lenny Martínez has been given quite a few opportunities to lead Groupama-FDJ this season despite his young age, but now he takes on a different task. Against many of the world's best climbers, he's been given the task of protecting David Gaudu in the mountainous stages of the Criterium du Dauphiné.

“I'll have to support David [Gaudu] as best I can and go strong on the mountain for as long as possible," Martínez said in an interview with DirectVelo. "I don't know if there will be a chance, but if I succeed, I will be 100 percent at his service in the last stages. If I can be the perfect wingman this week, it will be super."

The 19-year old, who is just off a fourth place at the Mercan'Tour Classic, was close to his first pro win at the Classic Grand Besançon Doubs where he finished second, and he also rode to sixth on the queen stage of the Volta a Catalunya proving his climbing worth already among the very best.

He will have a key support role for Gaudu who's preparing for the Tour de France currently, and concludes: “I listen more than I speak. It's going very well. Sure, when I play my cards on certain things I give my opinion. But it is above all the sporting director who proposes things and if they suit me, I accept them"
