Legendary Colombian cyclist Marlon Perez killed after a robbery attempt near his home

Tragedy has once again shaken the world of cycling, although this time for reasons other than racing accidents. The legendary Colombian champion Marlon Pérez died this Friday, October 4, from injuries sustained after suffering a stabbing attack.

The events, as reported by Teleantioquia, took place in Carmen de Viboral, Antioquia. Marlon Perez went out to walk his dogs on Thursday night. All that is known is that the 48-year-old former cyclist arrived at the hospital with a wound in his neck, where he was to die minutes later.

According to his sister Maryori, a police colonel in Bucaramanga, Marlon Perez was asked with a knife to remove a gold chain he was wearing;

Marlon Pérez was one of the great cyclists of his generation in the history of Colombia. Twice U23 champion, time trial champion and gold medalist at the 2011 Pan American Games, among many other achievements. But perhaps his best achievement was creating the path for the next generation including stars like Rigoberto Uran to the pros. This is the legacy of a great athlete whose death is still being investigated by the police.
