Jumbo-Visma brought three riders to the
Giro d'Italia with the ambition of going for the overall classification, however none managed to ride at the expected level. From the Dutch team, it was
Koen Bouwman who took the lead of the team and saved it's race.
"I will never forget these three weeks. I enjoyed the last day of this Giro. A lot of people were shouting my name from the side. That gave me goosebumps," Bouwman said after completing his fourth Giro. The 28-year old won the KOM classification with a determined and very strong run for the mountain points, despite not being at the same level as some of the climbers which he faced.
He finished the Giro with 294 points, whilst second place Giulio Ciccone had 163. A dominant win, which came from the specific focus on the jersey. Bouwman was in the breakaway on stages 7, 15, 16, 17 and 19, where there were hundreds of points available. He made the best out of those, whilst at the same time winning the mountainous days to Potenza and Santuario di Castelmonte - where he managed to succeed having not faced pure climbers.
"The two stage victories were fantastic, and winning the mountain classification is also fantastic. It is almost a pity that this Giro is over, although I am thrilled that I will see my family and friends again. It was three fantastic weeks," he said. Although Tom Dumoulin was crucial for his win on stage seven he, Tobias Foss and Sam Oomen all struggled to perform. Bouwman had the support of the team and the form to take home a much deserved title.
Team DS Addy Engels confirmed the positive outlook on the team's performance at the Giro, with a lineup that is very much secondary to what the 'bees' will have at the Tour de France: "We look back on a very successful Giro. We started this tour with ambitions for the final classification, but we soon had to set new goals... We can look back on some fantastic successes."
