Jakob Fuglsang is 39 years old and has past the prime of his career, one that came late (around five years ago) but he is not hanging up the wheels just yet. Retiring from pro cycling was very much on the table this season but after finding great form once again, the Dane found renewed motivation to keep searching for meaningful results in his pro career.
“I’m delighted that Jakob will return for the final season of his decorated career. Jakob has told me that he intends to go out with a bang, so I’m excited to see what he can do next year, to add to his already impressive palmarès," team manager Sylvan Adams wrote in the team's
press release. "Jakob has also taken our young, promising rider, Derek Gee, under his wing, and will continue to mentor Derek, and others, on IPT next year. Jakob is a true professional and has been one of the leaders on our team during his tenure.”
Fuglsang is a winner of several big races in the past and has seen several generations come and go. A pro since 2006, he has this year ridden to good form at the Criterium du Dauphiné, Tour de France and Canadian classics specially. Whilst not being able to bring a win, if he is able to replicate these performances then he will have chances of fighting for victories in smaller races or breakaways.
“I feel like I’ve found myself again this season and proven that I still have what it takes to be racing at this level in the biggest races on the calendar," the veteran said it himself. Not only for myself but also in support of my teammates, a role and a responsibility I really enjoy and appreciate".
“Next year will be my 17th season as a professional rider and I still enjoy pinning on a number in the morning before a race. I definitely feel I still have more to give and I can’t wait to show it next year and finish off my career on a high note.”
