Taking victory of a stage at the Baloise Belgium Tour would usually spark joyous scenes. Due to the sombre mood throughout the cycling world today however, Søren Waerenskjold's celebrations were understandably muted.
"My thoughts are with his family. It was hard to focus because we all know what happened today with Gino Mäder," said Waerenskjold in his post-stage interview, reflecting on the tragic new that the 26-year-old Bahrain - Victorious rider had been killed in a crash at the Tour de Suisse. "There are a few riders in the team who knew him and who raced with him."
“I am very happy with this victory. This was one of my better time trials. After the first part I had 490 watts on my wattage meter and at the finish it was still 482 watts, so I kept up my effort," the Uno-X Pro Cycling team rider said of the stage win. "I also almost took the leader's jersey, but it's good for us that we don't have to defend it during tomorrow's stage."
