After crowning herself the Queen of the Gravel in Veneto at the Gravel World Championships, Katarzyna Niewiadoma, the Canyon//SRAM Racing star has reflected on arguably the biggest win of her life.
"It’s a hard one, actually. I think it’s a solid top three," the 29-year-old Pole responds to GCN when asked if it was in fact her biggest achievement. "Just because of the celebrations afterwards and I feel like the last victory happened in 2019 and for so long I was crossing the finish line with my head down because I would get second, third, or fifth or fourth. Being able to raise my hands this time, I don’t know why, this moment was glued in my memory."
If not winning the Gravel World Championships, what then is the best day on the bike for the Queen of the Mountains winner at the 2023 Tour de France Femmes? "My best day on the bike wasn’t in a race," she says. "It was just an adventure I went on with my partner Taylor Phinney. We went exploring the world and we spent the whole day outside riding, having fun, jumping into the sea and just feeling like a kid."
Despite the highs in her career, there have also been lows. "I think it was the Women’s Tour in 2019. It was the first stage," she says, recalling her worst day on a bike. "Just before arriving in the UK, I was kind of sick so I was hoping that I could recover before that, but then we spent like five hours in the pouring rain. And it was so slow because the race was slow and no one wanted to go hard from the start. It was a really long, wet day."
