One of the big topics of controversy in the world of cycling right now is the attempt to make the sport more green and whether or not the UCI is doing enough. According to the first sustainability report published, the sport's governing body has dropped emissions by 20%.
“The UCI Sustainability Report 2021-2023 transparently communicates our progress so far and acknowledges the challenges we still face,” UCI president David Lappartient has said in a press release. “It [the report] provides clear objectives, timelines and actions to accompany the cycling community in the fight against climate change and towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The transformation that is required to achieve our vision of making cycling one of the most sustainable sports in the world will require everyone to play their part in their specific area.”
When unveiling their strategy to make the sport more green, the UCI set out a total of twenty-eight targets for themselves back in June 2021. Notably, the first updated report has revealed the UCI has cut its organisational emissions by 20% and is on course for it's overall target of 50% by 2030 and net zero by 2040.
