Kristen Faulkner is no stranger to winning in 2024, but without a shadow of a doubt her triumph today at
La Vuelta Femenina is the biggest - and also one of the most important of her career. The EF Education-Cannondale succeeded in a late attack after a day marked by the strong winds.
“At one point we rode out of a village, and then the race opened up on those major roads. Our team leader (DS, ed.) had already said that we had to position ourselves well in that village. It was SD Worx-Protime that increased the pace," Faulkner explained in a post-race interview. “Alison Jackson and I were good in the group. After that it was just a matter of surviving and staying in the group. The lead briefly dropped to 30 seconds, but then the lead grew again. In the final I quickly made the plan to make a late attack."
In a sprint it was unlikely that her or Jackson would've won in a group with Marianne Vos and Georgia Baker, so the chosen tactic was the attack. Perhaps luck or perhaps knowingly, Faulkner chose the perfect timing to attack the race with 5 kilometers to go. “I really chose the right moment. I immediately had a gap. The fact that I can finish it is really nice."
Faulkner rode to a solo win at the finishing line, almost rising to the race lead. "We came here with the team for a stage win and after four days we already have two. We can be very proud of that," she concluded.
