Jonas Abrahamsen made a name for himself at the 2023 Tour de France as important part of the Uno-X sprint train, as well with his third place from stage 18 breakaway. Yet, things could've gone differently for the Norwegian after a scary training accident in January that year.
"I cycled past here for the first time after the accident a couple of days ago, and I got a lump in my stomach. I don't remember anything about the event itself, so it's a bit scary," he confides in an interview with the Norwegian TV2.
Abrahamsen was practicing sprint train with his teammates when the unfortunate incident happened. At 60-70 km/h, he had trouble with his bike, fell over the handlebars, slammed straight into the asphalt before being thrown into a fence on the side of the road. "I had swallowed my tongue. But Søren and Tord broke open my jaw and ensured a free airway. It is not certain that I would have lived today without such good teammates, he says quietly."
"I was very lucky. When I got to the hospital I really only had a few scrapes. Who would have thought that when you are running at 60-70 kilometers/h and hit a fence?"
