The start of the
Giro d'Italia in Hungary was an unfamiliar sight, but a successful one according to the spokesperson for the Hungarian government who has talked about the great feedback obtained.
Mariusz Revesz, an Hungarian government commissioner has confirmed that there was a lot of support for the Giro d'Italia on Hungarian roads, as he detailed the numbers and feedback from the Grande Partenza: "At least a quarter of a million people... a sensational mood exceeding all expectations of the Italian organisers."
Budapest hosted the start of the 2022 Giro d'Italia, in an unusual start of the race abroad. With a stage for the puncheurs, a tricky time-trial and a bunch sprint, it's safe to say the opening three days of racing delivered the spectacle, whilst providing with a different scenery and a boost to Hungarian cycling.
"We want to thank Hungary, the government, local residents, fans and naturally the local organising committee for the Grande Partenza. The last three days have been a real success," he added.
With the Tour of Hungary underway from today onwards, the Grande Partenza has been combined with the race's rapidly-growing stage-race which takes in 11 World Tour teams who have kept staff and race vehicles in Hungary for the combination of races.
