Pieter Weening has had one of the longest careers in pro cycling and has recently retired in 2020, but more recently things took a dark turn as he is currently waiting for trial over accusations of assault and threats to his ex-wife and her brother.
It is reported that the assault has happened around Christmas time of last year, where he allegedly pulled out a knife which he used to threaten his now ex-wife and her brother. It is believed that there was an altercation in which Weening himself was badly injured.
Weening's lawyers Arnout Hurenkamp told De Telegraaf that “I will plead for acquittal. My client suffered permanent injury himself, he broke the jaw left and right in the face. A case of emergency. It sure was intense around this family gathering."
"My client asked those present to leave. However, he was confronted at his own house, a door was even kicked in, and he went on the defensive. He turned away," he concluded. Weening retired at the 2020 Giro d'Italia with Trek - Segafredo. Throughout his 19-season long career he's won stages at the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and several other big races in the calendar as a strong climber and breakaway specialist.
