Matteo Jorgenson left
Movistar Team at the end of last season, suggesting that the team's methods were not up to modern standards for elite riders. That appears to have changed in 2024.
Having previously heard from the likes of Iván Romeo about improving planning, sport director Xabier Muriel explained in an interview with
Relevo after Oier Lazkano's victory at the Clásica Jaén "we have taken a step forward in nutrition. Now we also have a little bit more planning, it's true. In the end, this advanced cycling is becoming more and more like Formula 1 and every little improvement counts".
Muriel insists on the big change for this year is planning. "Now they know when they have to push, when they have high altitude rallies and when they have breaks" he adds. "There is a lot of computer work behind, a lot of vision of routes, but it's worth it because each rider sees his stage clearly. Before, many times all the eggs were put in the same basket and there were guys who didn't have their place. Now, if you notice, before Enric Mas and these people make their debut, there are other riders who also have their chance" he said.
Changes as simple as having a chef at every race in which the team competes is something that did not happen previously. In short, the riders are more supported at all times. Movistar Team has made a great start to the season with this new philosophy and with young riders who are exciting, such as Romeo, Lazkano and Pelayo Sánchez. We will also see if these changes positively affect Enric Mas who went through a very complicated year in 2023.
