With their main leader Primoz Roglic out of the race, Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe found themselves in a tight spot. A team built solely with the purpose of supporting their Tour de France podium bid with the Slovenian suddenly needed to find a new purpose. On Sunday, the German formation seemingly finally picked themselves up from the ground and went on a full-on attack with Jai Hindley into a breakaway. Their DS Rolf Aldag was beaming with pride despite the GC favourites eventually neutralized the attack.
"What a great fight it was," Aldag exhales in a video on team's X. His team attempted to win the stage from a breakaway, but with little success. "I think we couldn't do more. We were a bit lost on Saturday, not having our leader, Primoz, in the race anymore. Understandably, it took us a day to really find ourselves."
"Today morning, there was a really great spirit in the bus, everybody wanted to go for that stage, in the hope that it's not gonna turn out to be another GC day. At certain moment, I think we had four guys (Hindley, Sobrero, Jungels, Denz) up on the road out of six... What can you ask more?" Aldag asks rhetorically. "The commitment was absolutely there. They kept on believing it."
"Even a world class team like Visma | Lease a Bike was pulling behind. We made it a very hard for them. Probably was race-decisive that they had to burn all their matches and Vingegaard had to go early. And then whole game turns around and we become kind of a spectator of the best in the world. Pogacar drops Vingegaard and you think 'Wow, this is a really impressive level they ride at'," Aldag concludes. He would've certainly liked to see Roglic to fight it out against the two after all...
