Diego Rubio probably had different expectations when he rolled up to Tour of Estonia 2022. It was supposed to be just an easy race for Spaniard before his main goals in second part of the season. Instead, the then 30-year old rider suffered exposed fracture of two bones in his left hand. While this usually isn't career-ending injury in itself, the disastrous operation in Estonia probably spelled the end of for former
Burgos-BH rider's career.
"I am trying to do the impossible," Rubio told DiariodeAvila twelve months after the terrible accident. "At the moment, however, I see it impossible to go back to racing."
"The only thing that has improved, and it's no small thing, is that the bones have healed. They have consolidated, but I still haven't regained the mobility I lost. I can't even hold the handlebars of the bicycle. Most of the doctors have told me that I will no longer be able to be a professional," Rubio explains his struggles.
"I have to be realistic. Psychologically it cost me a lot: I had difficult moments, but a year has passed and I can't continue torturing myself. I have to try to assimilate things as they come. It's difficult, but I think I'm ready for what's to come and honestly the more time passes the more difficult the race gets. I continue to do everything I can to recover, I do rehabilitation every day, but the truth is that it's very hard, almost impossible, because there's no improvement," he concludes.
