With a cut eyebrow due to the hard fall suffered in the penultimate stage of the
Tour de France and after losing fourth place overall to Simon Yates,
Carlos Rodriguez spoke to the media after a fantastic debut in the Tour de France winning a stage and finishing fifth in the classification.
"I had the bad luck that in the middle of the descent I don't know what happened to the front wheel," Rodríguez said in a post-race interview. "A spoke broke, the wheel then went off-center and just in a curve I went off the front and I crashed, but my teammates were '10', they helped me in everything I needed and I gave what I had, but it was not enough in the end."
The Spaniard returned to the front group and then, despite his injuries, he managed to keep himself under control throughout the rest of the day. He was dropped in the final climb but the losses were small. He descended from fourth to fifth in the overall classification.
However he had his team to thank to limit the losses in the final kilometers. "I have to be happy to have left everything, many thanks especially to Omar [Fraile] and Tom [Pidcock] who have done an incredible job at the end, we will try to come back another year and do better," he concluded.
