Victor Campenaerts recorded his first victory of the season today in the Druivenkoers Overijse. The Belgian from Lotto Dstny beat his former teammate Rasmus Tiller in a sprint à deux.
Striking detail: the previous two seasons he also won one race after such a sprint. "Brent Van Moer asked me when I was going to win my annual race," he laughed at Sporza.
Lotto Dstny was well represented all day at the front of the race, which Campenaerts took advantage of. "We were always well up front. I could play the game. Rasmus is a former teammate, so it was nice to be up front with him. He's very fast, so I didn't take over the last two kilometers. I said that I had Jasper De Buyst in the group behind it, but we agreed that one of us should win anyway because we rode together at Qhubeka," said the 31-year-old rider.
The two stayed ahead and Campenaerts turned out to be the fastest in the sprint. "I dared to play it cool. He is a super sweet guy and teammate, but I said 'sorry, you have to lead the way.' He was very disappointed, I understand that, but we are here to win the race. Campenaerts does not give presents," he concluded.
