Barcelona aims to host Tour de France Grand Depart over coming years

The Tour de France is a highly respected and well-known cycling event that attracts a worldwide audience, and Barcelona plans to use this to its advantage.

SportBusiness reported that the Barcelona City Council has been in talks to bring the "Grand Départ" of the Tour de France to the Spanish city. The Council delegation met with Tour de France event director Christian Prudhomme this week.

Jaume Collboni, the Council's First Deputy Mayor for Economy, Labour, Competitiveness and Finance, told Europa Press. “During this tenure, we have worked to recover the spirit that allowed us to open up to the world thanks to major sporting events because we believe that Barcelona’s sports alliance multiply the benefits for the city and for the competitions it hosts. For this reason, in the upcoming editions of La Vuelta and America’s Cup, we now want to add the greatness of an event like the Tour.”

Barcelona has a history of hosting stages of the grand tour, having done so in 1957, 1967, and 2009. This comes after the announcement that the 2024 edition of the tour will begin in Italy.
