After what was set to be a breakout year for Anna Shackley in 2024, the 22-year-old British rider has been forced into retirement from professional cycling, as after she was diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia in January, she underwent a heart screening, in which several irregularities were found.
After more extensive tests and procedures were done at a hospital in Barcelona near her hometown of Girona, during which time she did not train or race, the decision was made for the SD Worx-Protime rider to retire from the sport, as it was concluded that she would not be able to continue her career with such an issue.
Reacting to the news, her SD Worx-Protime sports manager said in a statement from the team that “we are very sorry to see Anna's cycling career end like this. She was one of the bigger talents in the women’s peloton. We saw in recent years that she was making good progress and we believed she could grow to the world top. It is especially unfortunate for her that she is now forced to stop. On the other hand, we are also happy that we were able to prevent any more dangerous complications. We hope Anna can return to her ‘normal’ life and we will work with the team to see how we can help”.
In this day and age, I’m actually surprised pros are not systematically tested for this (if only to avoid the financial risks of signing contracts). It is not something difficult to spot and enough amateur athletes have been found dead by the side of roads and forest paths to understand it is far more common than society imagines. We have cardiac stimulators in practically every village for the old, we systematically test certain cancers after 40, 50 etc. is it because we imagine young sporty people to be invincible that doctors don’t systematically screen for the most frequent heart conditions? Where I used to live you could not get a « pro » cycling licence above 50 without doing an ECG despite a BMJ study finding : « In addition, younger athletes (aged under 55) had a much higher risk (3.6 times) of atrial fibrillation than older athletes (aged 55 and older) who were 76% more likely to have the condition than non-athletes. » So basically a few crazy old guys with lower risk who are ready to go get tested while tons of higher risk youths don’t?? A policy which makes as much sense as the Red Cross outside the UK refusing blood donations from ANYONE having spent a cumulative 7 weeks in the UK during the years of BSE (mad cow), should we now fear vegetarians (I am just a hobby vegetarian) were fed stuff unknowingly???
It reminds me of Sergio Aguero, who were forced to retired from club football, [at his current club, at the time, FC Barcelona] due to irregular heart beats, he once collapes on the pitch due that heart issue. He was 32 at the time. She is young, much younger than Sergio, so she has more options on her side. She is pretty smart, from my view, so maybe she can be a cycling team's CEO or a director of her team. Her options are endless
