Mathieu van der Poel was worth gold for his teammate
Jasper Philipsen in
Milano-Sanremo on Saturday. The Dutchman controlled the action on and after Poggio and then provided a nice lead-out for the eventual winner. But it was not his achievements that were most remarkable, according to Bobbie Traksel who spoke about the first Monument of this year in Kop over Kop podcast.
"Mathieu van der Poel is a gentlemen towards his team, with the emphasis on his. This is also evident from his first reaction afterwards in which he immediately says that he hopes that Philipsen will now also stay. That was the most striking thing for me Milano-Sanremo."
Traksel continues his story. "If Van der Poel had not been there, Philipsen probably would not have won. It feels like his team and he also feels that responsibility to do this for his teammate. And that makes sense, because Philipsen is also important for the Dutchman. He takes some of the pressure off Van der Poel."
Jeroen Vanbelleghem agrees with his colleague and also thinks that Philipsen should stay at
Alpecin-Deceuninck. "Philipsen will make a decision after the classics. But I don't think any other team is better for him in terms of sport. Only financially he would benefit from another team."
Really?
He’s given away too much to seriously contemplate leaving.
He hopes to achieve more with Mathieu
They discussed during MSR and he « begged » Mathieu to control the race as he felt he still had the legs for the sprint which Mathieu duly did as thanks for the help in winning Paris-Roubaix.
These two are practically married.
Of course, it doesn’t harm to speak of going elsewhere before salary renegociations but he should take care not to bluff as many teams might have 2nd thoughts if they think long enough about if he could achieve similar results with them without a similar wingman.
He needs MVDP to win some races. MVDP does not need him
Normally not but he is still very useful for him and is appreciated
Ironically, MdVD is a classics and Cyclocross specialist, doubt he can win GTs if he did not focus so much on one day races as he is now
I would have said Soudal-Quick Step... but they shifted to Evenopoel... So Merlier and the new american sensation should be enough
For now anyway
