Nans Peters stole the show with a stunning solo finish at the
Trofeo Laigueglia, leaving UAE Emirates rider
Alessandro Covi to finish in third place, trailing by 46 seconds.
Without any teammates in the group chasing Peters, Covi was at a disadvantage and found it challenging to pose a real threat to the race leader. He was poised to claim the silver medal, but Andrea Vendrame's impressive final sprint allowed him to overtake and push him to third place with the bronze.
After a fall 40 kilometres before the finish line, he was able to get back with the peloton, but the incident resulted in him losing some crucial time. “I had to chase to get back. When I came back to the second group, I wasn't sure what the situation was, but the team told me there was a runner in the lead,” he told Cyclismactu.
Having secured third place in the same race last season, he was hoping to better his performance this time around, but fell short of his goal. However, he remains optimistic as there are many more races to compete in throughout the year. “I tried to chase him, but I was the only one really trying to chase him. I tried to do the best for my team, who I have to thank because we raced well today. Too bad for the fall, but we'll make up for it,” concluded Covi.
