Stan Godrie retires from cyclocross after years of struggle: "I don't think I have made any progress in the last three years"

The career of Stan Godrie is slowly wrapping up with final competitions of the 2023/24 season, which will be the last for the Dutch cyclocross rider. According to Godrie, he feels like his career had been in a standstill for quite some time now, which assured the 31-year-old cyclist to call it quits at the end of this winter.

"If I look at everything, I don't think I have made any progress in the last three years. I had been leaning towards the top twenty for years, but I wanted to make the step to the top fifteen. I did everything I could to achieve this, but I have to conclude that this did not work out."

The Dutchman also worked part-time in a bicycle shop during his cycling career. "That wasn't always easy, but I don't want to use it as an excuse. I have been able to train well and live for my sport. Of course there would have been more if I had been a professional. But you have to earn a professional contract through performance, it's that simple."

Godrie is therefore calling it a day as a cyclocross rider, but will continue to cycle. "I'm still quite young and fit, so I want to push my goals. I'm going to ride more on the road. Local criteriums, but also a few races in the top competition. And I'm also going to do gravel. I will ride the World Series races that are not too far away. And mountain biking, and especially Enduro, is a hobby of mine and my girlfriend."
