"It will be a fight until the very last cross" - Eli Iserbyt loses World Cup but shows better form in Hulst

Eli Iserbyt had a roller-coaster ride in Hulst this Sunday, but has managed to avoid the worst, as his battle with Laurens Sweeck for the World Cup win took a turn and now the Belgian will have to be chasing.

After his nerve injury and inconsistent performances over the last few weeks, Iserbyt's lead was under the threat of Sweeck. In Kortrijk Iserbyt looked better, and today he raced into third position, seconds behind Sweeck but now 4 points behind him in the standings. The Pauwels Sauzen - Bingoal leader had a strong start, but a combination of two crashes saw him far from the front.

He seemed to be out of the fight for the podium, however he stormed through in the last few laps to go through Michael Vanthourenhout, Lars van der Haar and Tom Pidcock who abandoned the race, to finish directly behind Sweeck. “My last laps were very good. I hope I can improve even further in the coming weeks. Laurens is having a strong season and I think it will be a fight until the very last cross," he commented.

The race was marked by the return of Mathieu van der Poel who took the win on the day. “When Mathieu overtook me on the first lap, I thought he would pull away from us by a minute. I finally finish in 22 seconds. It's only good for us that he didn't go very far," Iserbyt concluded. Next week World Cup racing will resume in Antwerp, with the presence of Wout van Aert in the field aswell.
