After the first three top crosses of the season, Fem van Empel's competition is gradually starting to scratch its head. The 21-year-old world champion always dealt with her opponents in a playful manner, but also she thinks it is a shame that some top riders are missing.
The fatigue seems to be slowly catching up to Van Empel too it seems. "After the trip to America I felt a bit tired and took some rest. Maybe that did me some good. Taking it easy during the week and then going all out at the weekend, maybe I should do that more often," the 21-year-old rider said after the race in Overijse.
However, it was not her goal to immediately crush the rest in the opening lap. "I tried to start quite conservatively and look at it a bit. That's how I usually approach it. I'm going into it with an open mind and trying not to have too many scenarios in mind. Only, I couldn't keep calm and I immediately rode away," she confesses to WielerFlits.
The competitors will soon get their chance, because then Van Empel will also be ready for her well-deserved rest. "After the European Championships in Pontchateau, I will do nothing for a few days and relax. I will therefore skip a few races in the following weeks."
