Clara Honsinger participated in cyclocross on Belgian soil for the first time in almost a year on Monday. The American came to the GP Sven Nys without expectations, but finished fifth in Baal.
"I thought I might still be able to get on the podium, but I made too many mistakes and it eluded me," said the 26-year-old Honsinger in an interview with WielerFlits. "And while everyone goes to Spain, I'll stay here and do some Belgian competitions. My goal is to achieve a good result at the World Championships in Tábor this season."
Honsinger came to Belgium from the United States the day after Christmas. "I wanted to spend some time at home with my family this year. And last year I had a difficult end to my season, after which my road season wasn't that good either. I really wanted to recharge my batteries and think about how I could be happier this year," said the American champion, who received a warm welcome in Flanders. "I think people like to see the stars and stripes."
By the way, Honsinger was not the only rider from the other side of the ocean who stood out in Baal. Ava Holmgren finished third and Isabella Holmgren was also in the top ten. "They are incredible," Honsinger said of the Canadian twin sisters. "Not only are they very mature in the race, but they both also have a good head. They think carefully. In addition, they are very friendly. I really appreciate their friendship and fighting with them."
