France's Celia Gery has claimed a thrilling Under-23 European Championship title after a dramatic sprint finish ahead of Marie Schreiber.
In trademark style, Marie Schreiber flew out of the blocks from the starting gun. At the end of lap 1 though, Schreiber had company in the form of a Celia Gery, Leonie Bentveld and Kristyna Zemanova at the front. As the latter began to start making a few mistakes though, the trio at the head of the race rode away into the distance.
Throughout, Schreiber was the one putting the hammer down on the front with Bentveld and Gery content to sit on the wheels. As they took the bell, Schreiber kicked hard again and Bentveld was put into immediate difficulty. In a thrilling finale, it went all the way to a sprint and despite leading the whole race, Schreiber was stunned at the line as Gery powered around to take victory.
