Wout van Aert will have a very interesting 2024. In 2023 he didn't bring the big victories however he was always present when it mattered. It will be another attempt to turn consistency into victories in a year where he will race the Olympic Games and, most likely, the Giro d'Itallia. But the main goal lies elsewhere.
"I would like to compete in a different race than I have done in recent years. In addition, it is an Olympic year, the focus will also be on that race," adding that he's unsure "whether the team allowed him to say this yet." It is an open secret that Wout van Aert will race the Giro d'Italia in 2024, reported by Gazzetta dello Sport several weeks ago. In words to Eurosport he assures however that a victory in the Tour of Flanders is the main goal.
"The big goal remains winning a Flemish classic. It's something I will be trying to achieve until it happens." This just about clears up what his preparation will look like in the coming year. This week a few have commented on how if he wants to prepare for the overall classification contention at a Grand Tour he must lose weight and sacrifice chances in the classics, but that doesn't seem to be passing through the Jumbo-Visma rider's head.
"There's always pressure. Every race where we've been number one people expect us to win. On the other hand I also expect to perform myself and try to not take too much pressure from the outside," he tells. "So it's a good thing that I've been there for a few years now you learn how to handle, But I think there's more advantages to being in the team than disadvantages."
