The Belgian national team have announced their lineup for the upcoming World championships and it includes the country's two strongest weapons on the hilly terrain, as Wout van Aert and Remco Evenepoel will come into the race looking for success.
Racing at home last year, Evenepoel sacrificed his chances for Van Aert, although the tactics backfired as Belgium missed support in the final crucial section of the race. This year's tactics should be different and in a more controlled race, however there will be some planning to make sure the same mistake doesn't happen twice. After finishing runner-up on both World championships in 2020 - and the 2021 Olympics, van Aert is exclusively focusing on the road this year so as to focus on the rainbow jersey on a very suiting terrain.
Alongside will be Remco Evenepoel who is currently delivering a stand-out performance at the Vuelta a Espana, leading the race after a week. The team will also include Liège-Bastogne-Liége runner-up Quinten Hermans who will be a very dangerous outsider. The trio will be having a protected role, whilst the likes of Jasper Stuyven will be crucial in covering moves; Stan Dewulf, Yves Lampaert, Pieter Serry and Nathan van Hooydonck will be helping to control the race and provide support before the main attacks start to come.
In the women's field, it will be Lotte Kopecky leading the charge on a route that will be well suited and gives further chance of having a rainbow within the Belgian team.
Belgium for men's World Championships Road Race: Remco Evenepoel, Wout van Aert, Stan Dewulf, Quinten Hermans, Yves Lampaert, Pieter Serry, Jasper Stuyven and Nathan van Hooydonck.
Belgium for women's World Championships Road Race: Valeri Demey, Julie de Wilde, Justine Ghekiere, Lotte Kopecky, Jesse Vandebulcke and Julie van de Velde.
