It's now or never for Egan Bernal in 2025 and he is aware of it. The INEOS Grandiers talent, more than two years after the crash that almost cost him his life, is facing the campaign where we will probably see his real level for the rest of his career.
At this point to think that he can win a grand tour again seems a utopia and at the next Giro d'Italia he can realistically aim for a top ten. Or perhaps to win a few stages or even to support another leader in his team. What we know for sure is that he will make his 2025 debut at the Vuelta a Andalucía in Europe from February 19 onwards. In the meantime, he's not sitting idly though, as he is training hard in Colombia;
A few days ago, Egan broke the record of the Belisario-Patios climb, a 5.91 kilometer ascent at 6.4% elevation gain and an altitude of more than three thousand meters with an average speed of 24.2 km/hour:
"The real races are coming, but in the meantime... For those who live in the capital or have ever done this climb, you know that it has something special. You can breathe cycling, it's one of the climbs most ridden by cyclists all over the world. And today after several attempts we finally lowered the time. So that the amateurs of Bogota try and get motivated," he said after the feat.
I've never been a real Sky/Ineos fan, but I'd like to see Bernal do well again, I've always liked him with his personality.
I think that a lot of people feel that way about Egan, including many of those who don't consider themselves Ineos fans. I wish him well this season.
