The Criterium du Dauphiné is definitely being an unusual race. Only minutes after two of the breakaway riders crashed on a descent during stage 6, the rest of the breakaway has taken a wrong turn after the race organizers ahead were oblivious to the correct direction.
The incident occurred with 30 kilometers to go. The breakaway of five riders, including stage 2 and former race leader Magnus Cort Nielsen, followed the race vehicles who took a wrong turn. In footage shown on the TV broadcast, it is actually possible to see fans reacting to the vehicles' mistake, and frantically pointing towards the left corner - which is properly signaled by arrows.
The riders seemed to have noticed the mistake, but nevertheless lost around a minute as they had to eventually turn around and return to the original route of the race. You can watch the video below:

Clearly the race organizers fault - the race organizers ahead were oblivious to the correct direction.

Following the lead car is the safest thing to do. Sometimes race organizer change the course during the race.

The headline could rightly be "authorities take the wrong turn and lead riders off course".
