USA turns to off-road riders as main stars fail to race World Championships

USA is not going to have Neilson Powless as EF Education-EasyPost battle for UCI points, Quinn Simmons due to fatigue and Lawson Craddock due to visa issues in the road race. With spots to fill and several possible contenders for the top spots not present, the team is resorting to other types of riders who can perform.

Keegan Swenson has been riding in mountain biking and, as many Americans have for the last few years, gravel events, where he has stood out as one of the country's best. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Swenson has been selected to ride the road World Championships this September.

“We know he has a world tour engine, we know he’s not intimidated by anything or anyone. And we know that the most incredible phenomenon going on in road right now is crossover riders diving in from other disciplines. This is an amazing opportunity for Keegan to show how talented he really is," USA Cycling CEO Brendan Quirck said regarding the 28-year old.

Whilst many teams have confirmed their lineups for the Australian race, USA is still struggling to choose their lineup. Several Pro Team and Continental riders will be at the start, and everything points towards a possible leadership from Brandon McNulty - who hasn't been on form however - and youngster Magnus Sheffield.
