On the eve of his return to the Tour de France, Mathieu van der Poel has been forced to come out and defend himself after criticism from his own supporters over a new sponsorship agreement.
Posting on his official Instagram account, Van der Poel shared the announcement of his and Flying Group's new partnership. "Thrilled to share I’m an ambassador for Flying Group," wrote the Alpecin-Deceuninck superstar, who also has similar agreements with Lamborghini and other notable brands. "Proud to represent a company that’s elevating the world of private aviation."
As touched upon already however, this new agreement didn't go down well with all of Van der Poel's fans. "Take the train dude and set an example," replied one commenter, with another following a similar thread: "Really admire you as a sportsman! But maybe you think also just a bit about our environment and incorporate this in one or the other partnership?! Remember, you are a role model to so many (young) cyclists!"
With this criticism clearly having being seen and heard by the multiple discipline world champion, Van der Poel decided to address those disgruntled members of his fanbase. "I’ve seen some of the reactions, and I want to be open about my partnership with Flying Group as a sustainable partner. I understand the environmental concerns, and I respect everyone’s voice," he begins his response.

"At the same time, for my sport and career, the way I travel matters. I work incredibly hard every day to perform at my highest level, and that means making choices that protect my time, my health, and my peace of mind. Flying relaxed, with less stress and exposure, helps me stay focused and healthy," Van der Poel clarifies. "This partnership isn’t about luxury, it’s about performance, recovery, and the kind of support that helps me give 100% every time I show up. I always try to make responsible choices where I can, but I also stand by the commitment I’ve made to my goals. Thanks to those who understand."

the entire sport, and every sport, does nothing but create waste and pollution. sport is unnecessary to live on a daily basis. so in the entire sea of waste on this planet- this is what people are going to single out? don’t give me the “it starts with one person b.s.”. then anyone being critical, be that person, and stop following every sport and go plant a tree.
and he doesn’t claim to be a climate advocate. what about those who are, and do the same?

You bring some very good points, and I especially love the one regarding climate advocates. I've read many an article describing how celebrities and the like jet around the world in their private aircraft to attend various climate change conferences, in order to discuss what can be done to 'save the planet'. Those situations have to be the irony of all ironies.
