Two Circus-ReUz-Technord riders get away from collision with a car with heavy injuries

Two riders from the continental Circus-ReUz-Technord were seriously injured and taken to hospital last Tuesday after a collision with a car. Wout Geerinckx and Obie Vidts were training in Spain when a car suddenly hit the two riders head-on.

20-year-old Geerinckx and 21-year-old Vidts were in Spain for a joint training camp of the training team with the WorldTour formation of Intermarché-Circus-Wanty. In a press release, the team announced that both riders were diagnosed with multiple fractures in hospital. "They will both be out of competition for months," it continues.

Team doctor Gerald Ackerl speaks of 'a serious traffic accident'. "After both riders received initial treatment on the road, they were taken to a local hospital. There, multiple fractures were identified on full-body CT scans. There is no damage to internal organs and no concussion has been diagnosed."

Nevertheless, the damage is not mild. Geerinckx broke his left thigh and right elbow and suffered various other injuries and bruises. He underwent successful surgery and will fly to Belgium on Friday, December 29. Vidts suffered multiple fractures in both hands, he also underwent successful surgery and is already in Belgium at the time of writing.
